When’s the Best Time to Post Social Media Content?
Let’s be honest. If social media is not your favorite thing, the question of when to post can be more a matter of when you remember to do it rather than when most of your followers are online. You might not want to take the time to try and figure all of that out, but don’t worry. It’s simpler than you think.
There are a ton of factors that make up the answer to the question, “When is the best time to post?” There isn’t one silver bullet time that is ideal for every following and platform. For example, your followers on LinkedIn will likely be more frequent during work hours while your Facebook and Instagram followers are more likely to be active after work and on weekends. So, that brings us to the question, how do you know the best time to post for your followers on your platforms?
Use the Right Tools
Thankfully, you don’t always have to figure out the best time to post based on a hunch. If you have a page (that’s a business page for Instagram), platforms like Facebook and Instagram actually tell you exactly when the ideal times are to post your content. They show you the data for every day, hour by hour. When you are thinking about when to post, that information can make a huge difference.
You can find this information by looking under the Analytics tab of your social media of choice. On Facebook, you can find this across the top of the page when on your business page. For Instagram business profiles, you will see a little bar graph in the top right of your profile page that opens your analytics. If you do not have a business profile on Instagram, you should consider making your page into a business page>! You’ll just need to have it connected to a Facebook business account.
Tools like these can answer the complex question of when to post, but what do you do when your platform doesn’t offer this tool?
Using Your Observation Skills
If you’re working with a platform like LinkedIn that doesn’t offer such a tool, there’s two main strategies to help.
First, you can always research to see what data is out there for usage habits. For example, LinkedIn reports that the overall best time to post is on Tuesday and Thursday between about 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. with a “sweet spot” between 10 and 11 a.m. Other people’s research can give you a good place to start for yourself.
A second strategy is to try and make an educated guess what your target audience’s daily and weekly habits are like. If your business is targeting B2B interactions, you’ll ideally want to target times when they are on the clock. If your business is looking for B2C conversions, you might want to try and catch them after their evening commute and on weekends. The trick is to make your best guess, test it, see what worked best, and repeat the cycle. Over time, you can develop an increasingly clear picture of the best times to post.
Make Life Easier on Yourself
Now before you charge off to target those prime times, I have one final tip for you. Scheduling posts, especially when you’re trying to post at the ideal time, can be a hassle to keep up with. Thankfully, there are a few tools out there that can make your scheduling needs a breeze.
Facebook actually offers its own scheduling tools under “Publishing Tools” on your company’s page that you can use to automate the time and date your post goes out. If you’re working with other platforms as well, other tools might be better.
