Erik J. Olson (00:01):
What is your actual reach when it comes to local seo? What is happening? I am Erik J. Olson, who are, you reach out to me on Instagram. Let me know who you are. You can find me on Instagram @erik.j.olson That’s E R I K dot J dot O L S O N. Yeah, man. Local SEO. So, like, for a long, long time, I’ve been saying to prospective clients, to clients on this podcast probably multiple times that there’s an, a service area, like an area, geographic area around your office where you have local SEO reach. Now, recently, we’ve internally clarified that local SEO is kind of a misnomer. Like if I were to ask like the operations folks, they’d be like, there’s no such thing as local SEO. It’s just organic SEO, but it’s locally focused. So like it’s, you know, nomenclature. What do you call, what don’t you call?
(00:56):
What, what, what? How do you categorize? I, I don’t really care. But there is certainly an aspect to SEO that is very locally focused. And for a long, long time I thought and said that it was effectively like a radius around your office. And the radius is somewhere between three and five miles in diameter. And if you do the math, like pi r squared, where r is the radius, if you were to say five miles square that, that’s 25. And then times PI 3.14, you’re looking at 75 square miles. That’s literally like what I said over and over and over again. Well, I, I think I actually did a podcast episode here on Journey to $100 Million about that. And one of our guys who focuses on local SEO was like, Oh yeah, Erik that’s that’s not technically correct. And I’m like, Oh, really?
(01:47):
Cause I keep saying it over and over. You’re like, What? What, what is it? What do you? And so he explained that like, when it comes to local SEO, it is certainly like the epicenter of your local SEO is your office, but it’s not an, it’s not a radius. So I’ve been describing it as like a circular radius around your office. And he is like, Yeah, it’s not like that at all, Erik. He goes, Some it, it, it varies like in each direction, North, East, West, whatever, in each direction around your office, the, the reach is different for every client, every industry based on the competition. I said, Okay, I get it. That’s cool. So it’s not, it’s not a circle, right? He goes, No, it’s not a circle. I said, All right, well, well, like how far is the reach? Like what is, what ranges are we talking about like half a mile to five miles or a mile to five? Like he goes, Well, on the short end it’s actually more like five to 10 miles. And on the long end it, it depends, right? Sometimes I’ve seen 50 miles, sometimes I’ve seen 80 miles, I’ve seen as as high as triple digits, Eric over a hundred mile reach. And I was like, Wow, really? I did not realize that. He goes, Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He goes, It’s definitely five miles. But typically,

Erik J. Olson (02:58):
Again, depending on a lot of different variables, we can get it to extend sometimes as far as a hundred miles away in one or two directions. Not a circle like I’ve been saying, but just like, almost like what’s it called? Well, I guess just in different directions. So it’s probably a much, much bigger area than 75 square miles like I’ve been saying. Because if you’re at a minimum basically of five to 10 miles and then in reality it’s like 2030 on a normal day and a hundred like to the extreme, that’s a big, big area. So I want you to think about organic SEO with a local focus. I’m not gonna say local SEO because we don’t say that anymore around here, but local SEO is a nice easy way to say what I just said. Organic SEO with the local focus, it’s a big area.
(03:48):
It’s a huge area around your office. So if you are thinking about taking on any kind of digital marketing, if you’re just starting in digital marketing, I would definitely recommend that you start there with local seo. Why? Cuz you don’t have to have a fast website. You don’t even have to have a website. You could have local SEO and boom, you could start getting some leads right away. Now you can only do so much with local SEO if you don’t have a website cuz there’s a direct tie in with the website. So it’s not just like Google Business profiles, which is there. There’s a big component there, but there’s a lot more to it, right? So there’s citations across the internet, name, address, and phone numbers. And then on your website itself, there’s a tie in to the local aspect, like a really big tie in.
(04:35):
So first I would start with local seo. If you have nothing at all, then I would go to a professional website. I mean, I guess really the first thing, honestly, you need a website, but it doesn’t have to be a professional website. It could be Wix, Weeble, GoDaddy, I don’t care. Build your own website. Just get a webpage or two up if you don’t have anything at all. Cuz that is way better than nothing. So you have to have some basic website. Do that on your own. Don’t come to us for that. Do that on your own. But when you come to us or someone like us, you want local seo, then you want a professional website and then you wanna move into basically full blown organic SEO. Things like social media and prospecting advertisements, those who come way later, right? So nail the basics first and the very first fundamental building block of the basics. Stage one is local SEO.
